Cord Blood Donation
Per current public bank guidelines, cord blood donations and donors must meet specific quality standards in order for the cord blood to be stored.
Please note:
- Public donation is only available at certain hospitals during collection hours. Please check with your hospital to see if they are a participating cord blood donation facility.
- If you choose to donate your newborn's stem cells to the public system, there is no guarantee that if it is collected the cord blood unit will be available should it be needed by your newborn or a family member. Approximately 25-35%¹ of targeted cord blood units are stored for transplantation.
According to a study published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, 3 out of 4 expectant mothers who have heard of cord blood banking still consider themselves minimally informed.
This online education course is a self-guided tutorial for all expectant parents designed to help you better understand the medical value of cord blood stem cells and your options for preserving them. The course follows the guidance of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and was developed and supported by a collaboration of experts in newborn stem cell preservation.
